1-1 The Super H Family

SuperH Family was introduced in 1993 as the world’s first single chip 32 bit RISC microcomputer showing adequate performance with little memory source or no cache, which had been thought to be difficult to realize.

Since then we have aimed to develop higher capacity, lower power requirements, more compact packages and more efficient products. We now offer the optimum solutions to our customers’ systems for key devices in the ubiquitous age.

The SH-1 is the first CPU core of the SuperH Family products.

Featuring 56 basic instructions, the SH-1 contributed to the smaller sizes of digital still cameras, increased functionality of digital notebooks and PDAs, and to the higher capability and lower costs of industrial equipment.

After that, we developed the SH-2 with added improvements in the CPU core, the SH2-DSP with better multiply and accumulation (MAC) functions, the SH-2E with a single-precision floating point unit and on-chip FPU and the SH-2A designed for high performance with Harvard architecture, with upwards compatibility. The operating frequency was improved from 20MHz in the SH-1 to 200MHz in the SH-2A.

The SuperH Family products that are primarily embedded in equipment controllers are called SuperH Controllers. We have developed the SuperH Controller including high capacity flash memory for easier use and a wide range of packages from 64 pins to 256 pins to offer.

On the other hand, we have released the SH-3 with an on-chip memory management unit in response to requests from customers that want to implement a general OS.

The SH-3 is used in PDAs or net connected devices installed with Windows CE or UNIX family general OSes. We have developed improvements for the SH-3 while maintaining upwards compatibility, such as the SH3-DSP with improved multiply and accumulation (MAC) functions like the SH2-DSP, the SH-4 with Harvard architecture and on-chip double-precision floating point unit with superscalar with vector or inner product operations and the SH-4A with improved instructions. The operating frequency ranges from 60MHz in the SH-3 to 400MHz in the SH-4A.

The SuperH Family products that are primarily used as processors emphasizing extendibility are called SuperH Processors. We offer OSes, drivers, middleware and tools with the SuperH Processors in cooperation with our partner vendors.

We continue to develop product variations for different applications.
We are introducing the SH7760 with on-chip LCD controller and USB host functions for Car Information Systems (CIS) for information devices, and the SH-Mobile for mobile phones with an on-chip camera interface and MPEG4 accelerator. We are developing the SH-Ether for network devices like routers and home servers with on-chip EtherMAC and other products with on-chip USB.

We are developing inverter controllers for industrial use such as motor control.
In this way we provide the optimum solutions for our customers’ systems, developing controller and processor lines for general use, and ASSP products for different applications.
